New Year's Poem 2008
The Crocodiles of the Nile
Along the river,
Light travels with the currents
Glittering like a starry night
Plants grow to reach for
What the sky reflects itself in
Life moves past me
With a strangely ancient and
Innate sense of flow
Where there used to be crocodiles
And sun-worshippers meandering;
Cars whoosh by a tamed river.
Where there used to be temple silhouettes;
High-rises towers adorn the skies, with dark,
Rectangular shapes shadowing the light
And into the distance, the desert
With its wild merciless heart, awaits
Those who wish to travel light.
I sit here on the banks of the river,
Casting my net of words, to catch images
To describe this odyssey
I am on.
